Spider Tech Shoulder Tape

Subacromial impingement (SAI) is one of the most frequently diagnosed shoulder conditions in adults with shoulder pain, and is associated with defects in posture, proprioception, and motor coordination of the rotator cuff, deltoid, and scapulo-thoracic musculature. In addition to manual therapy, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) are often prescribed with the intention of reducing shoulder pain attributable to tendon inflammation and/or bursitis. Pain reduction methods can reduce barriers for patients to actively participate in their rehabilitative exercise program. The use of kinesiology tape has become an increasingly popular treatment aimed at reducing musculoskeletal pain and improving function without the added potential complications inherent with the use of NSAIDs.

A recent clinical trial conducted by Dr. Amr Elmaraghy and published in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine tested the short-term effectiveness of pre-cut kinesiology tape, using SpiderTech’s Pre-cut Shoulder Tape, versus an NSAID in reducing shoulder pain as adjuvant therapy to a targeted rehabilitative exercise program for SAI (click here). The results showed that the SpiderTech Pre-cut Shoulder Tape, together with exercise physiotherapy, were equivalent to an NSAID and exercise physiotherapy at:

  1. Reducing pain
  2. Improving function

The authors propose three ways that the SpiderTech pre-cut tape can help treat an SAI diagnosis without the associated gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and allergic risks that NSAIDs pose:

  1. Pain modulation through the gate control theory, whereby the tape increases afferent feedback to stimulate neural pathways.
  2. Provision of a positional stimulus through the skin to assist or limit motion.
  3. Improved microcirculatory flow beneath the dermis by lifting soft tissue and fascia above the areas of pain and inflammation.

With both adjuvant treatments reaching similar statistical significance, the main differentiator between the two groups was the dropout rate due to side effects. Where 100% of the SpiderTech pre-cut tape group completed the study with no side effects reported, 16% of the NSAIDs group discontinued due to gastrointestinal discomfort/complications.  This led the authors to state that as an adjuvant treatment the pre-cut seems to be better tolerated, more convenient, and comfortable than the Naprosyn.

SpiderTech is the industry innovator of pre-cut kinesiology tapes. These pre-cuts have been designed and engineered in partnership with leading medical professionals in North America. The advanced design of SpiderTech pre-cuts standardizes patient treatments, ensuring the same level of patient care during each visit.
